Aquadene recreational facilities need attention
After receiving numerous complaints from the community's children about the pool's 'green water', parents took the issue to the uMhlathuze Municipality, requesting intervention
THE Aquadene community swimming pool has been closed for a week following complaints about the condition of the facility.
After receiving numerous complaints from the community’s children about the pool’s ‘green water’, parents took the issue to the uMhlathuze Municipality, requesting intervention.
Community members visited the pool to assess the situation and discovered that apart from chlorine, no pool acid was available.
The pump had also been removed for servicing and a mobile pump was being utilised.
Community member Luyanda Msane called on the municipality to fast-track the process to ensure the facility is reopened as soon as possible.

‘We have submitted our concerns to the relevant department and highlighted that at the current rate the mobile pump used to keep the pool clean cannot adequately handle the volume of water.
‘The grass around the pool is also overgrown and the general upkeep needs attention,’ said Msane.
City of uMhlathuze spokesperson Mdu Ncalane confirmed the matter was being attended to, but added there had been technical glitches and they were awaiting parts to complete repairs.
‘We apologise for the inconvenience as we know it is the holiday period and people look forward to cooling off at the pool.
‘We are experiencing similar challenges at some of the other community pools as well,’ said Ncalane.
Recreational upgrades
The community has further launched a ‘kids must play’ campaign which is focused on ensuring that children have spaces in which to play, and that such recreational facilities are upgraded.
Community parks, established over two decades ago, have all been left unused as equipment was not maintained and eventually eroded over the years.
Regular grass cutting is also neglected.
‘We invite residents to participate in community projects which will be announced on a monthly basis which they can support by offering their time, skills and resources in respect of the planning thereof.
‘By joining sport committees and other organised recreational groupings in the community, we can bring about change and ensure we can develop areas in the suburb where children can play safely,’ said Msane.
