Teen washed out to sea in St Lucia

Sibonelo Mkhwanazi of the Dukuduku area disappeared at a St Lucia beach last Friday

THE Msweli family of Dukuduku Reserve remains hopeful that the body of their son, Sibonelo Mkhwanazi, will still be found after he was washed out to sea at St Lucia’s Jabula beach last Friday.

According to reports, the Lethukukhanya High School learner disappeared while playing beach volleyball with his friends.

It is alleged that a group of people were enjoying themselves at the beach, but refrained from swimming after lifeguards warnings about the presence of sharks.

Sibonelo (18) was reportedly hit by a powerful wave and washed into the sea. Attempts to reach and rescue him were unsuccessful.

His grandmother, Hlengiwe Zitha, said Mtubatuba police informed the family that a human leg was found washed up on the beach on Sunday morning.

Forensic services personnel collected the remains for DNA analysis.

‘There is nothing we can do at this stage but wait,’ said the distraught grandmother.
