Port statistics for November

THE total tonnage of cargo handled at the Port of Richards Bay in November hit the 9,8 million mark, a substantial increase compared to October.

Of the cargo handled last month, excluding vehicles, more than 350 000 tons was liquid bulk, 65 313 tons break bulk and 9,3 million tons of dry bulk.

Richards Bay has the largest dry bulk terminal in the country and handles approximately 54% of total dry bulk cargo.

According to Transnet’s financial results for the six months ended 30 September, Richards Bay’s dry bulk terminal’s loading rate improved from 823 tons per hour to 864 tons.

In November, Richards Bay also recorded 1 006 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, with 706 units shipped from and 300 landed at the port.

The local port also recorded 157 vessel arrivals with a gross tonnage of 6,2 million.

This was a decline compared to the 166 vessel arrivals, with a gross tonnage of 6,6 million, in October.

Of the vessel arrivals last month, 20 were tankers with a gross tonnage of 405 604 and three passenger liners.

The 2019/20 cruise season began last month, with at least 10 cruise liners expected to call at the port until the close of the season in April.
