Stay alert this festive season

ZULULANDERS are urged to be vigilant over the festive season.
This warning comes from Empangeni Community Policing Forum (CPF) structures whose members urge residents to stay on high alert throughout the season.
While house robberies and hijackings appear to have subsided in Empangeni’s residential areas since the beginning of the year, the warning remains in place.
‘We are still seeing some cases of theft out of motor vehicles, which are mostly opportunistic crimes,’ said Empangeni CPF chairperson Zonita Grobbelaar.
‘Many people leave valuables visible in their car and this invites criminals to steal.
‘We are also urging locals to educate their guests on this matter as people tend to let their guard down when they are on holiday.’
Residents planning on going on holiday should test their house alarm systems to ensure all is in good working order while they are away.
‘People need to phone their security companies and inform them that they will be triggering their alarm to ensure the security company is still picking up the signal.
‘Having an inactive alarm could also negatively affect the insurance claim process, so it is important that everything is in working order.’
Holidaymakers and locals are warned to remain vigilant of their surroundings at all times, especially when arriving home late.
Emergency numbers such as the contracted security company, SAPS and the fire department, should be kept on hand at all times.
Empangeni SAPS – 035 901 5803, Empangeni Fire Rescue – 035 797 3911.
