Relief for motorists after N2 officially opened
The R1-billion, 33km stretch between Mtunzini Toll Plaza and Empangeni is now an 11.4-metre wide double carriageway which will ease traffic congestion and enable faster movement
TRANSPORT Minister Fikile Mbalula officially opened the newly upgraded stretch of N2 highway recently.
The R1-billion, 33km stretch between Mtunzini Toll Plaza and Empangeni is now an 11.4-metre wide double carriageway which will ease traffic congestion and enable faster movement.
With traffic volumes in excess of 12 000 vehicles per day, the previous lane availability proved inadequate and resulted in major accidents and many road deaths.
‘The many lives lost on this road must spur us into action and decisive interventions to change the behaviour of road users.
‘Road infrastructure is an integral part of safety and it is incumbent upon us to develop and maintain infrastructure that enhances safety.’
He said the upgrade will also help boost the region’s economy.
‘There is little doubt that roads are the lifeblood of the economy, and proper infrastructure eases the flow of traffic and enables faster movement of people and goods.’
Mbalula said farmers along the route will also reap benefits from the four agricultural overpasses, which have been lengthened as part of the project.
He warned motorists not to be reckless and drive at excessive speeds on the improved highway.
‘Those who take advantage of our good roads and place the lives of others at risk will face the full might of the law.
‘The deployment of traffic officers around the clock will ensure that the arm of the law also reaches those who think law enforcement on our roads is an 8-hour job,’ he concluded.
