No relief from big stink in Ngwelezana

Desperate for help, resident Thulani Khumalo told the ZO that the blocked sewage manhole has been left unattended for about five months

THE stench of sewage emanating from a blocked manhole in a section of Ngwelezana has residents frustrated.

Their children play near the dirty water which spills towards homes every day.

Desperate for help, resident Thulani Khumalo told the ZO that the blocked sewage manhole has been left unattended for about five months.

‘The problem is at Ngwelezana’s A1275 section which happens to fall in a rural section of Ngwelezana and the municipality does not bother to address it.

‘I have been calling the call centre and even went to uMhlathuze Municipality personally, but I receive no feedback or
help.

‘The sewage runs along our roads where our children play and my neighbours and I constantly have to mop up because the sewage enters our home through our kitchen.’

Frustrated, Khumalo took matters into his own hands four times, hiring a honeysucker at his own expense to clear
out the manhole. ‘I have spent close to R3 000 already, but that is not the solution. The manhole will be clear for
a month and then begins overflowing again.’

uMhlathuze Municipality Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, said the municipality would be contacting Khumalo to rectify the issue.
