Community fumes as toilet project is left incomplete

According to community members a service provider was hired by King Cetshwayo District Municipality to construct 110 pit toilets in KwaNcwane, Bhonkolo in Nsimbakazi in June

LACK of funds is believed to have prompted a private contractor to abandon a sanitation project in Ward 9 in the Mthonjaneni Municipality.

According to community members a service provider was hired by King Cetshwayo District Municipality to construct 110 pit toilets in KwaNcwane, Bhonkolo in Nsimbakazi in June.

Bhonkolo community member Nomusa Mthembu said contract workers left after digging a big hole, which now poses a danger.

‘After pointing out a spot where we wanted them to install our new toilet, they started digging, but then disappeared.

‘They left us with this big hole which is now filled with water.

This poses a great danger to our children and livestock.

‘When we informed our local ward councillor, we were told that the service provider had run out of cash and could not complete the project.

Another resident, Andile Dlamini of the KwaNcwane area, said the contractor left them with uncompleted toilet structures.

‘We are concerned about these structures, because they compromise our safety. We urge our district municipality to do the right thing by forcing the contractor to complete this project or to hire another one,’ he said.

Ward 9 councillor Thulani Zincume said about 50 homesteads were left with uncompleted pits and the contractor failed to erect toilet structures, especially in Bhonkolo.

King Cetshwayo District Municipality Public Relations Manager, Rekha Naidoo, confirmed there was a delay with the project but said construction had resumed by Monday last week . ‘The project was delayed owing to the unavailability of critical components, which have now been sourced,’ she said.
