Shaping boys to become great men

The community project began with a peaceful march from Central Park

Building a generation of men who respect and protect women was the main purpose of the Boys to Men programme in Empangeni on Monday morning.

The community project began with a peaceful march from Central Park, followed by a motivational session at the Sanlam Centre where local philanthropist and businessman, Ishwar Ramlutchman, delivered a keynote address.

This initiative was spearheaded by Galawela Music Production in a joint venture with Sanlam Centre and the Sivanada World Peace Foundation and the SAPS.

It was all about guiding young men, by giving them information on how to become great men.

It also touched on other issues such as career guidance, health issues and personal development.

Teaching boys about HIV/Aids, sexual transmitted infections and the importance of personal hygiene was also part of the programme.

‘Teaching youngsters to become responsible men involves a conscious process of mentoring and training. It begins with understanding the key principles associated with being a great man and a great father,’ said organiser Thokozani ‘Shakes’ Ngema.

Members of the SAPS, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), community leaders and other structures were also part of the programme.
