uMhlathuze municipality defends its tender processes

This follows a complaint that the municipality, among other public entities in the area, has been awarding tenders to businesses outside of Richards Bay

THE uMhlathuze Municipality has defended its tender processes and reiterated its commitment to local economic development.

This follows a complaint that the municipality, among other public entities in the area, has been awarding tenders to businesses outside of Richards Bay.

Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, said while they note the concerns raised, ‘the narrative is skewed and lacking truth’.

‘The municipality has even gone the extra mile to amend the supply chain policy to accommodate women, youth and disabled persons. To date, this has produced and is still producing desired outcomes,’ he said.

Ncalane said the municipality follows supply chain management processes, procedures and regulations that ensure fairness, compliance and value for money.

‘We encourage local entrepreneurs to develop themselves and trade with the city, but they must comply with all requirements.

‘The municipality also takes it upon itself to develop local business people and empower them through supplier workshops where trade procedures with government are outlined, including the tender system and BEE points systems,’ he said.

Ncalane added that the tender processes also allow for objections from aggrieved parties, according to which a complainant can lodge concerns in a formal process directly with the municipality.
