A SNAKE’S lunch was interrupted when Empangeni snake handler ‘Fearless’ Fred Lubbe was called by an uMhlathuze Village resident who thought he had a green mamba in his garden.
‘I explained that there are no green mambas in Empangeni and that it would be a harmless Natal green snake, but he insisted that I come and have a look,’ said Fred.
‘I got to the house and looked in the roof, but found no snake.
‘Just then some kids who came to see me catch the snake, scatter and shouting ‘snake1’!
‘I went outside and found this beautiful green water snake with a greater leaf folding frog in its mouth.’
Fred said he picked up the harmless snake by hand, which sent the children flying, shrieking as they scattered.
‘As I put the snake – frog and all – into my snake box, the frog freed itself, but was still in the bin with the snake.’
After getting home, Fred noticed that the snake had half ingested the frog, which was soon mostly regurgitated, leaving only the head in the snake’s mouth.
‘After a few minutes, the snake then started to swallow the frog again.
‘After about 10 minutes I went to see what was happening and there was a happy snake with the frog in its belly, looking very content after the meal.’
