New number plates mooted for KZN
The current system has been described as ‘colonial, subject to abuse, difficult for police to trace – and running out of digits’.

IN yet another blow for already hard-pressed KZN motorists, it appears they will soon have to fork out for new number plates. According to Mhlabunzima Memela, writing for Wheels24, a transport department spokesman has confirmed that the provincial cabinet had approved the department’s plan for ‘KZN’ plates to bring the province into line with the other provinces. The Western Cape is the only other province still using the ‘old’ system which identified the town where the vehicle was registered. These number plates were described by the spokesperson as ‘colonial, subject to abuse, difficult for police to trace – and running out of digits’.
“There is no need for this change,” said DA Eastern Cape transport spokesman, Radley Keys. “They are being utterly bizarre because our current system works fine. With this process every vehicle owner will be affected, while those in licensing businesses will be smiling with fat bank balances.”
The Wheels24 report went on to say the KZN department was awaiting permission from national transport to develop a plan for the roll-out of the new system and, thereafter, to amend legislation. The spokesman could not say what the switch would cost vehicle owners, but current registration costs are around the R500 mark, while basic number plates cost in the region of R150 per set.
……. and it will come with the E-Toll chip registered and ready to start implementing the system without resistance from the public????????
Nevermind the starving children, the homeless the lack of basic services ….. lets roll out plans to change number plates and road names ……..
Stop robbing us citizens of SA…. We pay Taxes, Toll fees and extremely high fuel price…. Now its number plates. How do we survive?
Cannot see the use of changing it, if the system work in the Cape why not for KZN. Just another way to make money. Hope if it is going to change it only changes when your licence expires
This is bull crap the anc gov just finds ways to ring our wallets and make their backsides fatter than it is.I would pay a cent and we shoul all stand together and stop this nonsense
Raw material suppliers comment:
What they plan to do with the “amended legislation” is to nationalise the making of number plates.
They want to stop everyone making plates & have the licensing dept make the plates through a single appointed manufacturer, similar to privatised plates.
This will under a smokescreen of BEE be given to connected cronies.
Turns out one of the Shaik brothers have a sizable stake in 3M & wangled the deal through the puppets.
Further is that they want to change the plates, costing manufacturers thousand and soon after take it away completely.
The plan is to put a percentage of suppliers out of business, as they can’t afford the changeover.
When they then take it away completely, a smaller percentage manufacturers will still be around, thus less of a ANC PR headache.
Kill ‘em off little at a time.
A new number plate set is R150 – R200. It’s not like you are going to pay it every year. It’s a once off cost.
