Post office warns of parcel delivery scam
Scammers have been contacting members of the public via SMS, informing them that a parcel could not be delivered because VAT was payable

THE South African Post Office has warned of a scam relating to parcel delivery.
Scammers have been contacting members of the public via SMS, informing them that a parcel could not be delivered because VAT was payable.
‘A link on the SMS leads them to a web page where they are requested to deposit the money into a bank account,’ the Post Office said in a statement.
‘The SA Post Office does not require customers to make any bank deposits before parcels are released.
‘If VAT or any other fees are payable on a parcel, this is paid when the parcel is delivered or collected.
‘The customer will receive a valid receipt for this payment,’ the Post Office said.
In cases where the Post Office has the recipient’s contact number, they will receive a SMS requesting them to collect the parcel at a specific Post Office branch.
‘The SMS will not request that funds be deposited into an account.
‘Members of the public who have information regarding this scam, are requested to call the police or the Post Office’s crime buster hotline on 0800 020 070.
