LOCAL talented rhythmic gymnast Alike Janse van Rensburg won the Level 4 section and claimed gold at the Zone VI Gymnastics Championships held in Harare, Zimbabwe from 9–13 December.
A contingent of just under 100 gymnasts represented Team South Africa at the competition where they performed superbly, taking home 17 gold, 21 silver and 13 bronze individual medals.
The team that consisted of Pre-juniors, Juniors and Seniors in Men’s Artistic, Women’s Artistic, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline and Tumbling took an all-round team medal tally of 20 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze home, which excludes apparatus – which too was astonishing.
After claiming gold in the Level 4 section, Alike helped her team to the podium in the team event.
Bay Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, who have over 80 members, are looking to take this sport to the next level this year, as they aim to get more gymnasts into the KZN side.
The Nationals competition will be held in Cape Town in October, whilst the Zone VI Gymnastics Championships will be held in Walvis Bay, Namibia in December.
