Church a multi-purpose asset for Mtunzini community
The 1 500-seater church will double as a community development centre during the week and be used for church service on Sundays
HUNDREDS of the Lutheran Church of South Africa congregants in the eMpangeni circuit gathered to witness the official opening of the church at Obanjeni, Mtuzini, on Sunday.
The opening was officiated by KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala, and Bishop Molwane Ubane.
Zikalala was accompanied by King Cesthwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi, uMlalazi Mayor Thelumoya Zulu and uMhlathuze Mayor, Mduduzi Mhlongo.
The 1 500-seater church will double as a community development centre during the week and be used for church service on Sundays.
The community centre’s first project will focus on early childhood development.
The church was built by consulting and advisory business Entsika with the aim of restoring dignity and a sense of purpose to the Mtuzini community.
Entsika also equipped the centre with laptops and other learning equipment.
Company Director, Zakhele Mkhize, said they did this to support a marginalised community facing the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality.
‘Something as simple as a church, doubling during the week as a development centre, has the potential of breaking the cycle of poverty and dependency by restoring pride and a sense of purpose.’
Mkhize said the church is more significant than just a building.
‘We built this for all Mtunzini community members, regardless of their beliefs, religious affiliations or backgrounds.
‘Our intention is to make it a focal point for the whole community, whether used for sport, art, music, dance or education.
