Nseleni Clinic hit by anaesthetic shortage

On Tuesday patients had to be referred to Ngwelezana Hospital

A SHORTAGE of anaesthetic injections at the Nseleni Clinic is a major cause of concern for the hundreds of patients requiring dental work.

On Tuesday patients had to be referred to Ngwelezana Hospital.

One patient accused the clinic of failing to deliver quality health care services.

‘Each time we come here for dental work, we are given painkillers, which are not helping us at all.

‘We need anaesthetic injections. We don’t know what to do now. This treatment we are getting here has been going on for weeks. We are being punished because we can’t afford private hospitals.

‘What confuses us is that the Department of Health allocates funding every year to various clinics and hospitals.

Where does this money go if they don’t have simple things such as anesthetic injections?’ he asked.

Nseleni Clinic Public Relations Officer, Vusi Khuzwayo, admitted that they had run out of anaesthetic injections. We made our patients aware of the crisis and explained to them that the matter was out of our control.

‘We are waiting for stock to arrive from our supplier and as soon as we receive it, things will return to normal,’ said Khuzwayo.

Provincial Department of Health spokesperson, Noluthando Nkosi, said the department was aware of a shortage of a specific anesthesia for tooth extractions at some of its facilities and would address the problem.
