TWO Road Traffic Inspectorate officers have been sentenced to six years imprisonment for demanding a bribe from a motorist in Gingindlovu.
Provincial Inspector Buthelezi (42) and Provincial Inspector Dube (33) appeared before the Durban Commercial Crime Court last week.
They received an amount of R3 500 two years ago from a motorist who had allegedly overtaken two vehicles on a barrier line between Eshowe and the N2.
According to reports, the motorist paid the money under the impression that it was bail to keep him out of prison.
He was not issued with a receipt or given a court date, but instead given a cellphone number linked to a Capitec bank account which belonged to one of the officials.
After depositing the money, he was released.
A full investigation was undertaken which led to the arrest of the two officers.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli, has welcomed the sentences.
‘We commend the complainant who was brave enough to take a stand and report the matter.
‘I encourage all motorists to report such crimes so that we can curb corruption at all levels.’
