Two road projects on track for completion soon despite delays

Sourcing of the cabling is reportedly a reason for the delay in the completion of the project, but that has been overcome and work resumed towards the end of last week

DESPITE a few unforeseen delays on the two major roadwork projects in the region – the N2 upgrades and the Melomed/eco junction intersection – progress is being made.

If all goes according to plan, traffic lights at the eco junction intersection should be fully operational by the end of the week.

Sourcing of the cabling is reportedly a reason for the delay in the completion of the project, but that has been overcome and work resumed towards the end of last week.

‘These lights are critical and any further delay is risking more lives,’ said Mike Patterson, Vice Chairperson of the Roads Federation.

‘Motorists are unsure of whether they should stop or not, and then there are those who fail to even slow down despite the temporary stop signs.

‘We need this intersection to be fully operational as a matter of urgency.

‘Temporary stop signs attached to non-functioning traffic lights are just as dangerous, if not more so, than before.’

While many people are of the opinion that traffic lights will not prevent accidents at this notorious intersection as numerous motorists fail to stop at red lights, Patterson said it would at least be a deterrent and the families of innocent victims would have legal recourse.

Meanwhile, the widening of the N2 between Mtunzini and Empangeni is on track to be completed next month.

According to Ravi Ronny, SANRAL Eastern Region Design Planning and Construction Manager, the contractor has suffered delays, among other things.

‘There has been some extension of time granted for claims, but the contractor is also late in completing the work, for which penalties are being applied for late completion.’
