Homes and businesses to be relocated for upgrade
Structures to be demolished around eSikhaleni intersection
HOMES and businesses structures close to the eSikhaleni main road intersection will be removed.
After years of rumours circulating around the township, the City of uMhlathuze has finally confirmed that some buildings on the edge of Mdlebe Ntshona Road will have to be demolished to make way for ongoing road upgrades.
According to city’s Communications Manager Mduduzi Ncalane, an alternative residential area with multiple units has been secured.
Another plot was identified to house business people who are utilising containers in the area.
‘The city has long started a process of engaging with all affected residents and the business sector about the impact of the eSikhaleni intersection extension.
‘The intention was to reach amicable solutions for their removal and relocation to allow for the road expansions.
They are all located on the road’s edge.
‘This matter is currently in courts and the city is still engaging with the business people who have solid structures on relocation options,’ Ncalane said.
Construction work to upgrade, expand and beautify the intersection started last year and is still in progress.
The upgrade followed years of complaints from motorists about the narrow roads which has in the past caused major accidents and traffic congestion.
