KZN disaster management teams on high alert

'Communities must take the necessary steps, which include seeking higher ground should there be a risk of flooding in low-lying areas'

KZN disaster management teams are on high alert as heavy rains are expected to hit the eastern parts of the province, with the risk of localised flooding from this afternoon into Friday.

MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sipho Hlomuka, has urged communities – especially those residing along the coast – to pay close attention to changes in the weather conditions and to take necessary precautions.

‘Communities must take the necessary steps, which include seeking higher ground should there be a risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

‘We also urge parents and teachers to ensure that learners utilise safe routes to get to school,’ said Hlomuka.

The disaster management teams will keep a close eye on areas that are prone to flooding and motorists have been urged to drive carefully as roads will be slippery in the wet weather.

The South Africa Weather Service (SAWS) on Wednesday also warned that after months of ‘inactive’ weather over most parts of the country, especially the summer rainfall areas, there are some changes on the way.

‘Cooler temperatures as well as showers and thundershowers are expected over the south-eastern and eastern parts of the country on Thursday and Friday.

‘Cold conditions are expected over the southern and south-eastern parts on Thursday, spreading north-eastwards and reaching Gauteng and Limpopo provinces on Friday. ‘Light snowfalls are also expected over the southern Drakensberg from Thursday night,’ SAWS said.
