Campaign launched against illegal abortions

In partnership with the Jozini Municipality, health officials and other stakeholders marched through the central business district to remove posters promoting illegal abortions

THE uMkhanyakude district health department last week embarked on a campaign against illegal abortions to discourage women from placing their lives at risk.

In partnership with the Jozini Municipality, health officials and other stakeholders marched through the central business district to remove posters promoting illegal abortions.

‘This campaign was originally launched by the provincial health department in 2015 to fight against illegal abortion practitioners who promise safe, quick and pain-free abortions, but which pose a health risk to young women.

‘These illegal providers are found on the street corners distributing their pamphlets.

‘We noticed that there are many of these adverts plastered on nearly all the building walls and lamp posts in many small towns, including Jozini,’ said district health spokesperson, Thabani Ntuli.

He said the fact that these adverts are being posted in public spaces such as taxi ranks and shopping centres, make many women believe they are accessing a legitimate service.

‘Women should visit their local hospitals to undergo safe termination of pregnancy,’ Ntuli said.
