Saving the environment one small deed at a time
Join the #ZOPlasticChallenge and make looking after our environment a priority and a way of life
ARE you passionate about saving the environment but think your contribution would be insignificant, or you are not sure where to begin?
Join the #ZOPlasticChallenge and make looking after our environment a priority and a way of life.
Running for the month of September, the #ZOPlasticChallenge strives to raise awareness of our environment and the extent to which pollutants, particularly plastic pollution, is suffocating our natural world both on land and in the sea.
We have chosen the month of September as it coincides with world coastal clean-up day on 21 September.
As a coastal region with numerous rivers and inland lakes and dams, we should all strive to use less plastic and to create less waste, which always ends up polluting our waterways.
For the duration of the challenge we will run a series of articles in the ZO Monday editions, as well as online, reflecting the negative effect plastic waste has on our immediate environment and lives, as well as providing tips on how to live in a more environmentally friendly way.
We would also like to hear from you, our readers.
The #ZOPlasticChallenge is an interactive initiative where we welcome your hints and tips on saving the environment.
What environment-saving practises have you implemented in your daily life and what advice can you give others?
We would like to credit your environmental ideas, so be sure to include your name and even a photograph of yourself that we can publish along with your environmental tip.
Schools could also take up the challenge and run their own challenge-within-a-challenge to instill a pro-environment mindset among learners.
We would love to see Zululand’s learners go the extra mile for the environment, so be sure to keep us updated on your school’s challenge.
Contact us on Facebook or by email on zulobs@zob.co.za with your waste-reducing hints, tips and initiatives that may spark environment-saving ideas in fellow Zululanders’ minds and homes.
Environmental tip # 1
Kicking off the plastic-reducing tips is the reusable fruit/vegetable bag being sold at Pick n Pay.
Instead of packing loose fruit/vegetables in plastic bags for weighing, why not spend just R7.50 on a material one (pictured) which can be used over and over again.
If you are worried you may forget to take it shopping with you, keep it packed inside your reusable shopping bags and keep them all inside the car.
