Councillor’s recipe for political success

The 60-year-old Empangeni councillor believes his journey in life led him to becoming ward councillor - a position he holds with great pride

ANDRE de Lange’s passion for serving his community has kept him active and thriving in politics for eight years.

The 60-year-old Empangeni councillor believes his journey in life led him to becoming ward councillor – a position he holds with great pride.

‘I’m originally from the Free State and moved to Ballito in 1985 where I was the station master at Umhlali Station, and then moved into finance from 2004.’

Being a man of many talents, De Lange uses his keen sense of humour and unique outlook on life to encourage him to continue in politics.

‘I joined the Democratic Alliance (DA) after it was suggested to me by a former councillor and I stayed in politics because I have a passion for helping people and want to contribute to making the world a better place – even if it is in the smallest way possible.

‘I chose to join the DA because I felt that it is the most diverse party and I believe that everyone, regardless of age and race, should get a fair chance to benefit from opportunities and have their basic needs met.’

A father of two children, the councillor prides himself by adhering to certain standards, which he deems a recipe for a successful political career.

‘I believe that to be a public servant, one must be honest and logical.

We should not be making promises that we cannot keep.

So, I always listen and give feedback without promising anything.’
