Men urged to speak out

City of uMhlathuze Human Resources head, Bongani Nzuza, said research indicated that men feel neglected

TO build a stronger and united South Africa, men should be at the forefront of change and declare war on social ills.

This was the message of clinical psychologist Sphamandla Mngomezulu, who addressed municipal employees at the Empangeni Civic Centre on Tuesday.

Attendees at the men’s health and awareness imbizo, hosted by the uMhlathuze Municipality’s Employees Assistance Programme Unit and the Human Resources section, were told it was time men got used to visiting health care centres such as clinics and hospitals and to speak to psychologists about their challenges.

‘Men are tasked with various roles and responsibilities in society and should openly speak out about their challenges and emotions,’ Mngomezulu said.

City of uMhlathuze Human Resources head, Bongani Nzuza, said research indicated that men feel neglected.

‘As workers we have families. We are part of the community. Men have this belief that they are strong, but when they face difficulties they tend to suppress their emotions, which can lead to mental disorders,’ said Nzuza.

Other speakers who addressed the imbizo included Sister Sebenzile Buthelezi of the Department of Health, who advised men to undergo male circumcision, test for prostate cancer, HIV and diabetes.
