No charge for market trading

NONGOMA Municipality has assured street vendors trading at Mona Market that they have a right to do business without being forced to pay any money or membership fee.
This call was made by Nongoma Municipal Communications Officer, Nonhlanhla Ntuli.
She was responding to allegations that market traders were compelled to pay a membership fee of R70, to be able to use the facility to sell their products.
‘Everything is free of charge at the market. We provided the market with jojo tanks for water, installed two lightning conductors and put up two Apollo flood lights to improve security at night,’ she said.
The ZO has a copy of a pamphlet, informing all traders that they are not allowed to work without taking membership cards.
One disgruntled trader, Ntombi Mazibuko, accused one of the sangomas for demanding money from them.
‘She is one of us, but she wants us to pay a membership fee to her, and threatens to kick us out of the market if we don’t pay.
‘She claims to have been appointed by the municipality to monitor all traders. This has been going on for a long time now.
‘She is very powerful and has strong muthi; even men are scared of her,’ she said.
