Rabies cases on the rise in Zululand

DESPITE ongoing rabies campaigns during which pet owners can have their dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies for free, reports of rabid animals and deaths continue in KZN.
Ethekwini remains a rabies hot spot, but during the last week two dogs in the King Cetswayo District have been found to be rabid.
One was found in the KwaDlangezwa area near the University of Zululand and the second near Bedlane in the Nkwalini Valley.
This month, three cases of deaths from rabies have been reported in KZN.
A four-year-old boy was bitten by a dog in the Maphumulo area in Illembe, while in the Ugu district at Izingolweni a teenager was confirmed dead as a result of rabies.
It is believed that a 58-year-old person from Wartburg also died of rabies.
This has not yet been confirmed, but all indications point to rabies being the cause of death.
Details of a second person having died of rabies in the Illembe District has also not been confirmed.
Pet owners area once again urged to have their animals vaccinated.
