District launches R37-million water project in eShowe
'In the spirit of Thuma Mina we are taking services to the people' said King Cetshwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi
MORE than 400 households in eShowe’s Emkhambeni area will benefit from the installation of water pipes that will supply water directly to their homes.
This after the official launch of a R37-million water project in the area last week.
King Cetshwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi, said this will change the lives of the residents, who will now have yard connections instead of receiving water by means of tankers.
‘In the spirit of Thuma Mina we are taking services to the people.
‘This project will follow the Expanded Public Works Programme principles and as such, labour intensive construction methods will be used.
‘Local labour will be sourced through an established project steering committee which will be made up of members from ward 2 sub-wards.
‘Contractors within the municipality who are registered on the King Cetshwayo and central supplier databases with Construction Industry Development Board grading 3 to 4, will be considered for work opportunities,’ said Mkhulisi.
She called for community cooperation as the project will be going through their properties during the construction phase.
Delivering her State of the District Address recently, Mayor Mkhulisi said they are prioritising the repair of leaks, back-filling of trenches that pose a safety threat to communities and reviewing the strategy for water development infrastructure.
She said the district is also currently reviewing its strategy relating to waste water treatment plants.
