IFP calls for urgent action on ill-discipline in schools
IFP provincial spokesperson for education, Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa, said the crisis engulfing schools warrants intervention
INFURIATED by the rise of unruly behaviour in schools in KZN, the IFP has called for provincial MEC for Education, Kwazi Mshengu, to act with ‘immediate effect’.
IFP provincial spokesperson for education, Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa, said the crisis engulfing schools warrants intervention.
‘We want the MEC to present a detailed plan on how he intends dealing decisively with unruly learners in schools. We make this call following a series of school violence incidents which claimed lives of both learners and teachers,’ Madlopha-Mthethwa said.
‘The latest happening involves a teacher at a high school who laid a charge of assault against a 20-year-old pupil who attacked him.
‘This incident was captured on video which went viral on social media. The MEC must take action against these bullies who hold our schools to ransom.
‘It must be made clear that bullies who do not care about their future have no place in our schools.
‘The MEC must draw a line in the sand that nobody should cross,’ Madlopha-Mthethwa said.
‘Our schools have been turned into circuses by a few learners who want to do as they please.
‘Learners must know that they are at schools to learn, not to disrupt learning. Unruly elements must be rooted out.
‘Our fear as the IFP is that ill-discipline and other social ills ravaging public schools will breed a generation of irresponsible citizens if it is allowed to continue unchecked.
‘We also call on parents to play their role in instilling discipline. Schools must make use of their governing bodies, getting all stakeholders involved in developing a code of conduct.
‘There is a dire need for training teachers in alternative forms of discipline, to ensure that they have the right tools to deal with all forms of unruly behaviour,’ Madlopha-Mthethwa said.
