Recycling waste paves the way for profitable venture

RECYCLING is a way of life for Richards Bay resident Jamna Raj, who has been earning an income by collecting waste paper, plastic, glass and cardboard for the last three years.
Operating from his residence in Brackenham, the qualified panel beater started his business, Jams Recycling Project, in 2016 and has employed two people who assist with collections and the sorting of refuse.
Having expanded his collection activities to several streets in the suburb, he also does weekly collections from businesses and schools in the area.
While he would like to expand his business and services, Raj’s reach is limited because he has one small bakkie and trailer.
‘I use my backyard as a sorting area, but would like the support of local companies and businesses to grow the project, acquire a piece of land as well as another vehicle for collections.

‘Recycling is a good income-generating venture if one has the manpower and resources.
‘I initially started with recycling in 2015 but stopped when my van broke down, but since reviving it we have been going strong.
‘The business continues to thrive as my family, especially my wife, helps with sorting and oversight of the project.
‘Our goal is to cover the entire suburb street by street. The whole community has become involved and we have drop-off zones in the area.
‘We collect anything from white paper, cardboard boxes, tin cans, plastic bottles, glass and milk cartons.
‘All these items are things we throw into the dustbin, but we need to become more environmentally conscious about re-using and recycling, saving the planet and creating more jobs.’
