Port handled 8,8 million tons of cargo in May

Richards Bay recorded the highest with 8,8 million metric tons of cargo handled followed by Saldanha with 7,1 million tons of cargo in May

A TOTAL of 21,5 million metric tons of cargo was handled at the country’s ports in May.

This according to the latest statistics released by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) last week, which records the activity at South Africa’s seven ports.

Richards Bay recorded the highest with 8,8 million metric tons of cargo handled followed by Saldanha with 7,1 million tons of cargo in May.

It was however, a decline for the Port of Richards Bay compared to the 8,4 million tons of cargo handled in April.

Of the the total cargo excluding vehicles last month, 404 035 tons was imports and 13 037 coast-wise.

One hundred and fifty cargo vessels with a total tonnage of 6,3 million arrived at the Port of Richards Bay in May.

Of these vessels 19 were tankers, 12 were general cargo and 121 were bulk.

This was also a drop compared to the 170 total vessels in April this year but an increase compared to May last year.

Richards Bay also recorded a total of 722 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, 405 shipped and 317 which arrived at the port.

The total number of containers handled last month was an increase compared to the 679 in April.
