FNB warns public of eBucks scam
This comes after a local businessman was contacted by a fraudster claiming to be from the bank's eBucks division

FIRST National Bank (FNB) has warned its customers not to fall victim to a scam relating to its eBucks rewards programme.
This comes after a local businessman was contacted by a fraudster claiming to be from the bank’s eBucks division.
‘They said I had earned 2544 eBucks and it is being converted to R999 which will be available immediately at any ATM.
‘I was then requested to confirm my full names which the caller knew and then he provided most of my card number but said he needed me to complete the number as it was not clear.
‘I then told him I left the card at home and he asked if he could call me in the morning,’ he said.
CEO of eBucks Rewards, Johan Moolman said the programme would never contact its members to ask for their personal or banking details.
‘We would also not request customers to make any transactions on their accounts.
‘In addition, our members do not earn cash but are rewarded with eBucks which you cannot withdraw at an ATM,’ Moolman said.
According to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), this type of scam is referred to as ‘Vishing’ where a fraudster phones their victim posing as a bank official or service provider.
‘They use social engineering tactics to manipulate customers into disclosing confidential information, while at the same time leading them to believe that they are speaking to the bank or service provider.
This information is then used to defraud the victim.
‘Criminals will use these techniques in the hope of tricking recipients into disclosing their personal information on bogus online platforms or on spoofed websites.
‘All it takes is a few duped individuals to make phishing a profitable business for cybercriminals,’ said CEO of SABRIC, Kalyani Pillay.
