Richards Bay businesses suffer ongoing crime wave

A CRIME wave affecting several businesses in Emaljedraai street in Alton has left owners despondent and frustrated in their efforts to increase security measures.
Business owner, Cyril Moodley said as new business developments have sprouted in the area, crime has also increased at an alarming rate.
Owing to a new truck stop nearby and other building developments, traffic has increased in the vicinity with more prostitutes also frequenting the area at night.
Over the last two months, several burglaries have been reported and while businesses have beefed up security measures, criminals are now tampering with the electrical sub station boxes and cutting off the power supply to prevent electric fences and alarms from activating.
‘The alarms also go off several times in the early hours of the morning and despite our efforts to secure our premises, criminals still gain access, break windows and steal from our stores.
‘We have tried to make contact with the local law enforcement authorities to highlight this challenge, but to no avail.
‘Our appeal is for the SAPS to assist us and do frequent patrols and visible policing in the area at night to deter criminal activity.’
