CANSA comrades raise cash
'We have managed to generate R8 100 for this charity, with donations still expected to come in,' Desiree said on Monday
LOCAL long distance road runners Desiree Verwey and Dawie Augustyn hit the 2019 Comrades Marathon start line with two goals in mind, to finish the gruelling ultimate human race and to raise money for CANSA uThungulu.
‘We have managed to generate R8 100 for this charity, with donations still expected to come in,’ Desiree said on Monday.
Desiree, who ran in her Zululand Multi Sport Club colours, crossed the line in 9 hours;15 minutes;19 seconds to earn her first Robert Mtshali medal after five successful runs.
‘I started off this year’s race with the hopes of getting another Bill Rowan (7hrs:30 – 9hrs:0) medal, and was on target and feeling strong, before I started having issues with my groin with 38km to go.
‘So I reverted to the run/walk strategy, which slowed me down a lot.’
Dawie, who ran in his Richards Bay Athletics Club attire, crossed the line in 11.01.38 to secure his Vic Clapham medal.
‘Comrades always humbles you as a person and this year’s vibe all along the route was amazing.
‘The spectators pull you through the dark times and the fellow competitors make it bearable.
‘This year’s event was well organised and I really want to encourage people to donate more money toward CANSA uThungulu.’
One needs to go to the Back-a-Buddy website to donate.
CANSA is a non-profit organisation that relies solely on community and corporate funding to ensure the sustainability of the organisation.
Funds generated from the Back-a-Buddy account will be used for operations and care of cancer patients who live far from Richards Bay, but stay in the care home for 4-12 weeks for treatment.
