Felons’ attempted prison break thwarted
Sbonelo Magic Mthembu (34) and Bongani Dube (49) almost escaped through the roof of their cell
TWO felons almost succeeded with their plan to escape from the maximum security section of the Qalakubusha Prison in Empangeni at the weekend.
Sbonelo Magic Mthembu (34) and Bongani Dube (49) almost escaped through the roof of their cell.
This was Dube’s fourth attempt of breaking out of prison.
Mthembu is serving a life sentence for murder and Dube a 49-year sentence for armed robbery.
Looking bleak and defeated, the men appeared in shackles, escorted by armed security, in the Empangeni Regional Court on Tuesday.
Both chose not to opt for legal defence but rather represent themselves, and did not apply for bail.
Mthembu explained that he wanted to get the court matter over as soon as possible.
‘Since I committed the crime, I am happy to speak for myself,’ said Dube
Before leaving the court, Mthembu pleaded with the magistrate to assist in moving him to another prison.
He claimed he is not receiving adequate health care.
The attempted escape and the fact that the men managed to get through the roof, raised concerns about the security at the facility that houses inmates connected to serious crimes.
Department of Correctional Services Provincial Coordinator, Thulani Mdluli, said an internal investigation has been launched into the incident.
‘We can confirm that the men tried to escape on Sunday morning, just after midnight. They were caught while still in the roof ‘
Mdluli said they were awaiting detailed information, but assured the community that the prison is secure.
