Mugging alert in Empangeni

Such crimes became more prevalent as winter approaches

The Empangeni Community Policing Forum (CPF) has issued a warning to domestic workers to be vigilant after a mugging incident last week.

CPF Chairperson Zonita Grobbelaar said there were reports of muggings close to the Bloemenhoff flats last Thursday.

‘A group of young men were hiding in a bush at the park below Bloemenhoff in Farewell Road and mugging the pedestrians walking by.’

The incident apparently took place at around 6pm.

‘CPF members and local security companies reacted as soon as the problem was reported, but when they got there, the young men had left.’

Grobbelaar said that such crimes became more prevalent as winter approaches.

‘It is getting darker earlier and domestic workers who walk from their places of work are targeted because they are easy victims.

‘We urge employees to consider letting their staff finish work slightly earlier or to give them a lift to the nearest bus stop.’
