The Mhlathuze water strike is ‘over’

Scores of employees associated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), had embarked on the illegal strike, demanding among others full time employment

ALL employees returned to their purification plants following the Mhlathuze Water strike which ended on Thursday – but the story remains unfinished.

Scores of employees associated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), had embarked on the illegal strike, demanding among others full time employment.

Mhlathuze Water spokesperson, Siyabonga Maphumulo, said they were pleased that the strike was over and that water supply had returned to normal.

‘Workers returned to their duty stations and all reservoirs that pump water are showing signs of improvement. Areas that had previously been without water, have also had their services restored.

‘Mhlathuze Water would like to thank the public and stakeholders for their understanding during the strike,’ he said.

SAMWU Local Secretary, Thabo Mpanza, said they consulted with their provincial leadership and regional ANC leadership, after being served with a court interdict by the employer last Tuesday.

‘A resolution was reached that we need to report back to work.

‘We are currently in consultation with our lawyers, as we are going to Durban Labour Court on 4 June to force the employer to give us our demands.

‘If the employer refuses, we will be forced to down tools again. It’s not over yet,’ said Mpanza.
