A MTUBATUBA woman is in police custody for abandoning her newborn baby in a shop.

According to police reports, the woman visited the shop last Friday afternoon just before closing time.

The baby was only discovered on Saturday morning when the shop was opened and the newborn’s cries were heard.

She was taken to the Mtubatuba Clinic for a check-up, after which she was taken to Hlabisa Hospital where she will be looked after until she is placed in the care of a family.

The matter was reported to Mtubatuba SAPS, who opened a case of child abandonment.

The baby’s mother was traced through family members and arrested last Saturday.

She appeared in the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court last Monday and was remanded in custody until Wednesday.
