Iron boost for blood donors

KZN Health MEC endorses SANBS Ironstrong campaign

KZN Health Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has endorsed the South African National Blood Services’ (SANBS) Ironstrong campaign aimed at boosting donor iron levels by issuing them with supplements.

In KZN in particular, being severely affected by iron deficiency, SANBS decided to roll out the #Ironstrong campaign pilot project in this province earlier this year.

Blood donors aged 16 to 45 will be offered a two-month supply of Ferrous Sulphate tablets following a whole blood donation.

Recent clinical studies suggest that frequent blood donations may, in some donors, lead to iron deficiency.
