Empangeni residents thought bomb scare was ‘an action scene from an action movie’

The Richards Bay Explosive Unit was called in and conducted a number of tests with sniffer dogs and various equipment

PEOPLE in the vicinity of the Empangeni SAPS 10111 emergency call centre offices in Tanner Road were left wondering if a movie shoot was in progress, or whether it was the real thing, when some heavy duty bomb disposal squad officers moved in to comb the area.

It proved to be the real thing as the area was cordoned off in response to a potential bomb threat after two unattended bags left in front of the building were reported.

The Richards Bay Explosive Unit was called in and conducted a number of tests with sniffer dogs and various equipment.

After determining that the bags were safe to open for inspection, it was found that one bag contained CDs and the other a pile of rubbish.

‘It turned out not to be a bomb threat. We were notified by the public about the two abandoned bags and simply had to take the necessary safety precautions,’ said King Cetshwayo Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose.
