Melmoth residents fed up with house break-ins

'I don't sleep at night because I am always waiting for the time robbers will break into my house. I fear for my family's safety,' one resident said

COMMUNITY members in Melmoth say they are living in fear owing to a spate of repeated house robberies in the area.

Residents said multiple burglaries are taking place every night in the Melmoth CBD and have called for heightened law enforcement in the area.

‘I don’t sleep at night because I am always waiting for the time robbers will break into my house. I fear for my family’s safety,’ one resident said.

Another resident, who did not want to named fearing for her safety, said her home was broken into last week Wednesday.

‘I live alone and every night without fail I lock the gate, the doors and I make sure all windows are closed.

‘Since there has been a lot of burglaries lately, I even lock my bedroom door.

‘I usually wake up around midnight to use the bathroom, but on this night I only woke up at 5am, which was very strange,’ she recalls.

She said when she opened her window in the morning, she noticed that her gate was open.

‘Entering my lounge I immediately noticed that the TV stand was empty.

‘They took my TV and my watch, even all the food inside the fridge,’ she said.

She said there was another attempt to break into her home on Thursday night.

‘I knew they would come back the following night because most houses were being hit more than once. And the damage to my gate showed signs that they were trying to break in again.

‘But I had already replaced the locks and they couldn’t get in the next day,’ she added.

Another resident was not so lucky and has been forced to relocate after her home was broken into seven times.

‘We no longer stay here because they will end up killing me.

‘When I was there cleaning up the old home and removing the rest of our belongings, I noticed that they had broken in again.

‘The bath tub was broken, the window was open and my husband’s tool box was taken.

‘We reported the break-ins and the police are doing all they can,’ she said.
