A FATAL accident on the N2 near Mtubatuba on Sunday afternoon saw three men lose their lives, while two women were critically injured.

The incident occurred in the Shikshela area, about 10km north of Mtubatuba, when a white Toyota Hilux and a blue Toyota Corolla collided head-on.

It is thought the Hilux had been travelling south and the Corolla north.

Three male occupants in the Corolla, who had all been entrapped in the vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene, while two female occupants in the Hilux were taken to Hlabisa Hospital in a serious condition.

All services, including the Mtubatuba Fire Department, were on scene and used the jaws of life to extricate the entrapped occupants.

The exact cause of the accident is under police investigation, but Mtubatuba police have an urgent safety message to convey to motorists.

‘We urge all motorists to take heed when overtaking on any roads, but especially when travelling at high speeds on the freeway,’ said Mtubatuba SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Justice Hlabisa.

‘Motorists must not attempt to overtake numerous vehicles at once, and to not overtake on a blind rise or around a bend.

‘Ensure you give yourself enough time to get to where you are going, rather than rushing – and speeding – to get there on time.

‘Because of one driver’s poor decision, all family members – mothers, fathers, siblings, children – will suffer.’
