New speed humps near the Gingindlovu interchange irk motorists

'The speed humps are a problem. Anything faster than 5–10km/hr will damage your vehicle if it is a bit low,' ZO reader Pieter Weideman said on Facebook

MOTORISTS who regularly use the R66 to commute have raised concerns over newly built speed humps near the Gingindlovu interchange.

The humps are in the vicinity of Shoprite, and people are concerned about their height and narrowness which cause motorists to virtually stop before driving over them.

‘The speed humps are a problem. Anything faster than 5–10km/hr will damage your vehicle if it is a bit low,’ ZO reader Pieter Weideman said on Facebook.

‘This is definitely unacceptable… I had to stop dead to go over these monstrous speed humps,’ said Mehmood Deedat.

‘uMlalazi Municipality has the most speed humps in South Africa – and the biggest ones. They have no concern for private motorists whose cars are damaged.’

Motorists say the vicinity in question is not a high accident zone, but they are concerned that it will become a hijacking and smash-and-grab hot spot owing to the humps.

Stefan Beukes said speed humps should rather have been erected at the R34/R66 Nkwaleni intersection, which is a high accident zone owing to motorists driving off the side of the road and around the corner before meeting the R66 towards eShowe/Melmoth.

uMlalazi Municipality’s spokesperson, Mkhuseli Buthelezi, said the R66 does not fall under the municipality’s jurisdiction.

‘The KZN Department of Transport is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and repairs of the road and would have been responsible for the installation of the speed humps.
DoT spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane was contacted by telephone, email and WhatsApp, but failed to respond.
