A 23-year-old woman, Bandile Sithole of Mevamhlope, was arrested over the weekend and appeared in the Ngwelezane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for allegedly dumping her newborn baby down a pit latrine.
Passers-by heard the infant’s crying and retrieved the little one.
The baby has been admitted to Ngwelezana Hospital for medical attention.
Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said the matter is under investigation.
‘Crime is crime irrespective of circumstance and those who are guilty must be charged accordingly,’ he said.
According to the police report, Sithole is unemployed with no post-school qualifications.
Director of LifeLine Zululand Sue Stevenson said that desperation and circumstance drive people to severe extremes.
‘It is so sad that people are so depressed that they are pushed to such actions. There is always help,’ she said.

This is disgusting! The mother must be ashamed of herself. What is she going to tell this child when he/she is old enough to ask questions about his childhood? There is a lot of alternatives than dumping an innocent soul in the toilet.
I don’t understand what has to be investigated,the women dumped her baby,that is reason enough for prisonment.some people can’t have kid,and here is an ungrateful person.kids are a gift no matter what your circumstances are.
I think they should not grant her bail, I also think that there is no circumstant that could lead to death of an innocent little baby.
Why do these woman do that to the baby ,they should just give me the baby instead of putting the baby in the bin ,they so cruel to do that to innocent lives
Stop criticizing this woman, we not all coming from same background and we guys misuse girls for sex when they are desperate. When they are pregnant we runaway no one ever arrested a boy for running away and even now no one is questioning where the father is. It hard to be a woman like this girl, not working with no post school qualification, yet she have commited crime but the father of the baby must be charged also and if they sentence her she must get helped with education upgrade so that she come out changed person
Eish this thing that was done by dis young women is realy so painfuly, why she didn’t take the baby to scial workers if she wil not afford to take care of his or her life properly.
