HUNDREDS of residents from Ncutshane Township in Pongola have challenged the local court not to grant bail to a policeman accused of shooting Sifiso Sithole (25) to death in December last year.
Const Mxolisi Donda (30) appeared at Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, to apply for a bail, which was turned down.
He was then remanded in police custody, until 5 April this year.
It is alleged that Sithole had a confrontation which led to a fist fight with off-duty Const Donda, en route to Emadanyini area in Pongola.

Community member Musa Mabaso, who witnessed the confrontation, said Donda rushed back to his car to fetch his pistol, after realising that Sithole was too strong for him. ‘He pulled his service pistol and shot Sithole in the back several times. This police officer is also facing another charge for attempted murder.
‘He is furthermore, accused of pushing his wife out of a moving car. We don’t need such police officers in our communities.’
Sithole’s father, Sam, said they were hoping that the justice system will play its role by making sure that the perpetrator is punished for his action.
‘To my knowledge, police officers are meant to protect the community. I am sure that he was trained before being hired as police officer,’ said Sithole.
The case was postponed to 5 April, as the court is still waiting for ballistic test results.
