Empangeni club celebrates milestone centenary year
President Clive Kelly elaborated on the honour it was to be celebrating the club's centenary year, as many sporting clubs in South Africa have not lasted that long
THE Mancosa Empangeni Rugby Football Club (ERFC) held its 100th annual general meeting at Mick Kelly Park on Tuesday evening, which was well attended.
President Clive Kelly elaborated on the honour it was to be celebrating the club’s centenary year, as many sporting clubs in South Africa have not lasted that long.
He also requested a moment of silence in honour of the late Chris Edwards who played a major role in the club’s development.
Kelly highlighted the stalwart’s many achievements and reminded those present that many people have put in the hard yards to make the club successful.
Disappointments included the rugby section dropping out of the first division league to the Zululand league this year owing to a lack of finances and player availability.
The KZN Ruby Union also withdrew its grant this year, which further hinders the club’s financial recovery.
The club used to receive R125 000 annually from the union, so this is a huge gap to fill.
Squash captain Tessa Gouge reported that the club entered four sides into the Zululand Winter League, with the fourth team winning their section.
Cricket captain Tommy Chilcott highlighted that their team played in the second division of the Saturday 24 Over League finals and are currently competing in the T20 league.
The Empangeni Athletics Club (EAC) were welcomed back after a number of years and will be given office space on the premises.
EAC Chairperson Jabulani Gumbe was ecstatic to be back and reported that the athletics club achieved two silver and seven Bill Rowan medals at the 2018 Comrades Marathon.
Empangeni Darts Association President Vleis van der Westhuizen was welcomed into the ranks and will also set up a home base at the local club.
The 2019 committee is as follows – Clive Kelly (President), Paul Gouge (Vice President), James McIllrath (Chairman), Tommy Chilcott and Njabulo Dludla (Vice Chairmen), Trevor Dlodlo (Club Captain), Kathy Sparnon (Honorary Administrative Secretary), Heather de Kock (Honorary Treasurer), Thomas Chilcott (Honorary Match Secretary) and Charles Mndaweni (Development Officer).
