Good coastal rains bring welcome relief
The widespread rain has given farmers hope as they go into the winter season
GOOD rains on Monday evening have brought relief to the coastal area, but as in the past, the catchments of the major Zululand dams have received little rain.
Figures of 112.5mm in Empangeni (SASRI), 98.5mm at Heatonville (Pogela), 75mm at Mfuli and 87mm in Richards Bay were recorded.

Further north, however, much less rain was recorded, with places such as Makhathini (ARC) receiving 16.3mm, Pongola (SASRI) 15.2mm, Mkuzi town 11mm and Hluhluwe (Glenpark) 44.9mm.

iSimangaliso received 31.5mm at St Lucia and 46.8mm at Nyalazi near Charter’s Creek.
Inland, Melmoth recorded between 35mm and 46.4mm.
Southern Zululand experienced good, continuous rain, with the Entumeni sugar estate receiving 62.7mm, eShowe (Woodgarth) 38.4mm and Gingindlovu (SASRI) 40.3mm.
The public is still urged to use water sparingly.
The Goedertrouw Dam is at 44.9% of capacity, 0.2% down on the previous week, but 10% better than last year.
Pongolapoort and Hluhuwe Dams are at 41.9% and 87.6% respectively.
Last week they were at 42.3 and 89.2%
The Klipfontein Dam outside Vryheid is overflowing at 103% compared to the previous week when it was 90.6%.
