Zululand teen raises support for needy learners

As founder of Vuka Uzakhe Project, Mvuzo Nhlozi, gears up to roll out his back to school campaign in February

ONE youth’s journey to impact the lives of underprivileged children is taking shape as founder of Vuka Uzakhe Project, Mvuzo Nhlozi, gears up to roll out his back to school campaign in February.

Focused on empowering the community through sport and education, the project is based on community involvement and participation to meet the needs of the poor.

The back to school campaign encourages community members to donate new and used school uniforms and shoes to children from rural communities; one of which is is Kwa -Zibe Primary at Mkuze which has 200 learners.

Nhlozi, a former John Ross College learner, has been a keen rugby player for several years and at the end of 2017 received a junior contract with the Toyota Cheetahs.

‘Rugby was an integral part of my life and everything I did revolved around it.

‘But at the height of my excitement and realising my dream of playing professional sport, I was diagnosed with chronic kidney and pneumococcal diseases and this changed my whole outlook on life.

‘My diagnosis led me to another element of my life, giving back to society. I invested everything into this organisation with the same passion, dedication and love I had for rugby.

‘Having a positive impact on other people is more important than sport success.’

‘It is knowing that because you are here, you bless lives and you develop people. This is what I aspire to do through my project.

‘This is why we challenge our community to reach out and help those young children in need of basic school items and give them a head-start to finish their school careers.’
