Stokvel club celebrate
'Stokvels look to find ways in which to alleviate financial constraints individuals have experienced in the past, or help them plan for the future to achieve some goals'
IDENTIFYING the need to help women become more financially savvy and empower them with income-generating projects ideas and ways to save, community worker Sharon Mdletshe started the Eagles Wings Women Club in Mzingazi this year.
At the club’s year-end function last week, Mdletshe hosted 100 members to a luncheon, where they distributed their earnings for the year and also received an awareness talk on crime and gender-based violence from Captains Debbie Ferreira and Michelle Michael of the Richards Bay SAPS.
The club falls under the umbrella of Eagles Wings Shelter, an initiative of Mdletshe’s to build a facility to help women and children affected by abuse and violence.

‘I opened this club because many pensioners and grant beneficiaries were using their SASSA cards to borrow money and they remained trapped in the cycle of debt.
‘Stokvels look to find ways in which to alleviate financial constraints individuals have experienced in the past, or help them plan for the future to achieve some goals.
‘These goals vary from supplying their families with groceries during the festive season or pay school fees at the beginning of the year.
‘Our mission is to empower the women in our area and provide them with the help and support they need, ‘said Mdletshe.
The group were grateful for donations from Tronox, Umfolozi Municipality and local businessman Ndoda Cele for their event.
