St Lucia NSRI’s first call-out

Duty crew were nearby on a training exercise when they received the call-out

ST LUCIA NSRI Station 40 recently executed their first official call-out after a fishing boat capsized in the surf at Cape Vidal.

Deputy Station Commander, Rick Stadler, said the team was activated following reports of the upturned skivee (open fishing boat) at about 9am last Saturday morning.

Crew members were in the area on a scheduled training exercise and reacted immediately along with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers.

The NSRI, together with members of the public, assisted all three occupants of the capsized vessel and brought them to shore.

The only injuries the anglers had suffered were from fish hooks which punctured their skin during the incident.

‘The casualty boat was righted in the surf and towed to shore by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers using their patrol boat, while the casualty boat was recovered without incident,’ said Stadler.

‘Our NSRI rescue swimmers assisted to free dive on the capsize site to recover fishing gear for the three men.

‘After their gear was recovered, no further assistance was required.’

NSRI commended Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers and the members of the public for their assistance.
