MTUBATUBA police have warned the public against a police recruitment scam.
The scam was brought to the attention of police officers last Friday after many people applied for a ‘job’ on offer.
A message circulating on WhatsApp stated that candidates between the ages of 18 and 30 were urgently required to take a psychometrical test at Mtubatuba SAPS, and that there was a R2 500 fee.
This amount was to be paid to a Captain Phewa, a bogus name used by the scammer.
The scammer said the reason behind this urgent psychometry testing for potential candidates was because the police station had successfully recruited four new police officers, but that they were being replaced as two women were pregnant and two men had criminal records.
Mtubatuba SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Justice Hlabisa, warned people who are desperately seeking employment to not fall for this scam.
‘Mtubatuba SAPS follows a specific procedure when advertising posts, which are advertised at both national and provincial level’ he said.
‘Anyone who has been caught by this scam and paid the R2 500 must open a case at Mtubatuba SAPS against this scammer, who is using the police logo to commit a crime.’
