Richards Bay NSRI helps ailing yacht limp to shore

The yacht had experienced motor mechanical failure

A YACHT with motor mechanical failure was assisted to its moorings at Tuzi Gazi Marina by the NSRI on Tuesday.

At about 5pm, NSRI Station 19 duty crew were activated by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following a request for assistance from the yacht’s skipper.

According to duty coxswain Jacques Kruger, the yacht had departed Richards Bay and was headed to Durban when it was caught in strong south-westerly winds.

The skipper decided to return to Richards Bay but discovered, on entering the port, that the yacht had motor mechanical failure and could not return to her moorings without assistance.

‘Spirit of Richards Bay was launched and on arrival the yacht was rafted to our sea rescue craft and brought safely to her mooring,’ said Kruger.

‘No further assistance was required.’
